HEALTH AND SAFETY
How nutrient deficiencies are killing your health potential

(BPT) - Key nutrients are cornerstones of good health, yet deficiency among Americans is skyrocketing. Are you unknowingly suffering from a nutrient shortage?
Dr. Ronald Hoffman, medical director of the Hoffman Center in New York City and host of the radio program “Intelligent Medicine,” points to three major vitamin deficiencies affecting people today. He offers his expert insight on each and what you can do to fix the problem.
Omega-3s
“Many North Americans are omega-3 deficient because we eat highly processed foods that lack essential fatty acids and not enough oily fish,” says Hoffman. “The problem is particularly acute for vegetarians, those who prefer not to eat fish or are allergic, and young people who are picky eaters.”
In the U.S. up to 91 percent of Americans are omega-3 deficient and a Harvard study ranked omega-3 deficiency as the eighth leading cause of preventable death. Omega-3s are considered “essential” because the body cannot make them and must ingest them from external sources.
Omega-3s benefit the body in countless ways, including the optimal functioning of cell membranes. “The cell membrane is responsible for translating messages from adjacent cells and organs into chemical work inside the cell,” Hoffman explains.
There are more than 27,000 published studies on omega-3s showing the benefit of omega-3s, from brain and heart health to boosting mood and skin health. Omega-3s are particularly notable for cardiovascular health. The American Heart Association recommends at least 1 gram of omega-3 EPA and DHA a day for those with established coronary artery disease.
“Fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines provide the most omega-3s,” says Hoffman. “I also recommend supplements in soft gels or liquid form, or gummies and emulsions for kids.”
He notes when selecting a supplement, freshness and dosage is crucial.
“Processing, packaging, quality control, proper inventory management and distribution make a difference. Recomends products that vertically integrated from boat to bottle, ensuring the absolute freshest and purest omega-3 products in a wide variety of delivery systems,” Hoffman says. “I recommend that the average person take a dosage of 1 to 2 grams daily.”
Vitamin D
Because people can produce natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) with sunlight, many assume they get enough. In reality, vitamin D deficiency is widespread. Up to 36 percent of Americans are vitamin D deficient and up to 91 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. aren’t getting enough of the sunshine vitamin.
“Vitamin D is actually more than a vitamin,” Hoffman explains. “It’s a ‘pro-hormone’ and modifies the expression of many genes. This means it plays a powerful role, not just in building bone, but in the body’s immunity, muscle strength and even mood and cognition.”
Many factors affect a person’s ability to make enough vitamin D, including age and location. During sunny seasons, 10 to 45 minutes of direct sun exposure daily can help maintain adequate vitamin D, but for many people this is not possible all year long and supplementation is necessary.
“Current recommendations for vitamin D are 600 IU for ages 1-70; for pregnant or breast-feeding women and individuals over 70 it’s 800 IU. But this dosage could short-change many individuals with special needs or who have inadequate sun exposure,” says Hoffman. “The best bet is to measure vitamin D in the blood and supplement until an optimal blood level of 40-60 nanograms per milliliter is achieved.”
Magnesium
Most people have heard of magnesium but are unsure how it impacts their health. An estimated 50 to 80 percent of Americans are deficient in magnesium, mostly due to a diet of refined foods.
“Magnesium is an essential mineral that is a co-factor for literally hundreds of biochemical pathways in the body,” Hoffman explains. “It is particularly crucial for energy production in the mitochondria, tiny powerhouses within the cells. Therefore, inadequate magnesium can be responsible for physical fatigue and mental depression.”
He also notes magnesium, along with calcium and vitamin D, is essential for bone health.
You can correct a deficiency by eating a diet rich in plant-based, unprocessed foods like nuts, leafy greens, avocados and dried fruit. However, many people require supplements to reach optimal magnesium levels.
“Check labels for the amount of elemental magnesium in each supplement and shoot for 200-500 mg daily. Be sure to meet with your doctor prior to taking any supplement,” says Hoffman.

HELPFUL HINTS
5 ways to boost your health in five minutes or less
(BPT) - You know those days when your normal schedule gets thrown completely out the window? You’re tired, overrun and can barely think about the next thing on your to-do list, let alone work on your larger goals or concentrate on your health.
“Luckily, major results can stem from small steps, even if they seem inconsequential. These tiny decisions throughout your day add up to create a gradual shift towards change and transformation when it comes to your health,” says Paul Kriegler, registered dietitian with Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company.
When you’re flying at rapid speed throughout your day and could use a small win, Kriegler suggests trying a few of these five-minute health commitments:
Whip up a sustainable energy boost. Think of food as fuel for your body. When you’re busy and on the run, don’t forget to pack healthy lunches and snacks to keep you nourished throughout the day.
  • A protein and powdered greens shake is the perfect quick snack or lunch.
  • Cut up veggies at the beginning of the week to pack for lunch.
  • Make a 3-ingredient salad. All you need is lettuce, a protein, and another veggie.
  • Throw together stew or chili ingredients for a week of healthy dinners and lunches.
Do you have five minutes? Fit in a workout. Kriegler says a workout doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t!) disrupt your entire day. If you find yourself with five minutes to spare, get up and move.
  • Work out your kinks with five minutes of stretching or foam rolling.
  • See how many pushups you can do in five minutes.
  • When you’re at work, run up and down the side stairs of your office.
  • Fit in two sprints up and down your street before dinner.
  • Do three to six yoga poses to target a particular body part or objective.
  • Find yoga video that focuses on relaxation or strength.
  • Head out to your backyard for five minutes of jumping rope, playing tag with
  • the kids or trying a YouTube exercise video that looks interesting.
Plan for the days and weeks ahead. Achieving a goal always involves planning. Find five minutes in your day to make sure you have a healthy plan in place.
  • Plan a healthy menu for dinner tonight or start your healthy shopping list for the week.
  • Pack your gym bag for tomorrow’s workout.
Take time for yourself. “When you’re constantly on the go, remembering to take time for yourself can be a challenge,” says Kriegler. “Whether you have to get up five minutes early or stay up five minutes late, fit in some time to connect with yourself.”
  • Try a five minute meditation to relax your body
  • Walk outside for a few minutes of sun and fresh air.
  • Pour yourself a big glass of water to take your supplements with in the morning.
  • Call someone in your support network for encouragement. This could be a weight loss coach, running or workout buddy, friend or spouse.
Although these may seem like minor tips, these small wins can help you on your journey toward a healthier way of life.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
A Simply Perfect Roast Turkey

Makes 24 servings and ready in 4hrs 30 mins.

Ingredients:
  • 1 (18 pound) whole turkey
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 quarts turkey stock
  • 8 cups prepared stuffing
  • Add all ingredients to list
Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place rack in the lowest position of the oven.
  2. Remove the turkey neck and giblets, rinse the turkey, and pat dry with paper towels. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. Loosely fill the body cavity with stuffing. Rub the skin with the softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Position an aluminum foil tent over the turkey.
  3. Place turkey in the oven, and pour 2 cups turkey stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Baste all over every 30 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan. Whenever the drippings evaporate, add stock to moisten them, about 1 to 2 cups at a time. Remove aluminum foil after 2 1/2 hours. Roast until a meat thermometer inserted in the meaty part of the thigh reads 180 degrees F (80 degrees C), about 4 hours.
  4. Transfer the turkey to a large serving platter, and let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes before carving.

Household Tips
Two is Better Than One
Two thin coats of paint are better than one. It will take more time and work, but the end result is worth it.

Paint Remover
Mix equal parts of turpentine and ammonia to remove even harden paint from clothing.

Painting Baseboards
Use a dustpan with a rubber edge to push wall to wall carpeting down while painting baseboards.

Quick Paint Job
To quickly paint a large surface where not a lot of care is required, for instance a front porch, use a cheap sponge instead of a paintbrush. The job will be done in half the time.

Buying Paint
As with  paintbrushes, buy the best paint you can afford. It will go farther and is cheaper in the long run.

Paint Container
For small paint jobs, pour paint into clean empty milk cartons. The edge is easier to wipe the brush on than on the rim of a can.

Painting Wire Fences
Use a paint roller to paint a wire fence more quickly.

Painting Information
On a piece of masking tape, write down the date the room was painted, number of coats, color of paint, and quaintly of paint used. Stick the tape inside the light switch plate before replacing.

Puttying and Painting
Mix putty with paint to avoid having to paint later.

Staining Woodwork
Apply stain to woodwork with cotton balls for even coat.
