When you are in your "due diligence period", you should have your inspections done.  Below is a list of inspections and definitions of each one.  Not all areas, and/ or homes will require all of these.  In our area, a home inspector will cover the home, and most of the items listed, but if the septic tank is still active, that would be a different inspector.  The same would go for a detailed roof inspection if there are problems found from the initial inspection.
